More detailed destination descriptions for travelers planning by altitude, season, road access and experience style.

Leh & Indus Valley Ladakh
3,500 m

Leh & Indus Valley

Capital hub, acclimatization base, old town, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, markets and the great Indus Valley monastery circuit. Leh should be treated as a cultural destination, not only a transit stop. Spend time walking slowly through the old bazaar, visiting palace viewpoints, drinking butter tea in local homes and preparing the body for higher journeys.

Nubra Valley Ladakh
3,000–3,200 m

Nubra Valley

A broad valley north of Leh with Diskit Monastery, Hunder dunes, Bactrian camels, Sumur, Panamik and Turtuk. Nubra is lower than Pangong and Tso Moriri, making it a smart second step after Leh. The valley combines Silk Route history, desert scenery, Balti villages and beautiful night skies.

Pangong Lake Ladakh
4,250 m

Pangong Lake

Pangong is famous for changing shades of blue, wind-shaped shorelines and stark mountains. It is beautiful but high and exposed, so it should never be rushed on the first arrival day. Visit after acclimatization and enjoy sunrise, sunset and short walks without disturbing the fragile lake environment.

Tso Moriri & Changthang Ladakh
4,520 m

Tso Moriri & Changthang

Tso Moriri is quieter and more remote than Pangong. The lake belongs to the Changthang plateau world of nomads, wetlands, kiang, migratory birds and the monastery village of Korzok. It rewards travelers who like solitude, photography and deep high-altitude landscapes.

Zanskar Valley Ladakh
3,500–4,000+ m

Zanskar Valley

Zanskar is one of Ladakh’s great remote cultural regions, with Padum, Karsha, Phugtal, Rangdum, dramatic gorges and expedition trekking routes. It is ideal for travelers seeking monastery depth, village life and more serious overland adventure.

Sham Valley & Alchi Ladakh
3,100–3,700 m

Sham Valley & Alchi

Sham Valley is excellent for lower-altitude culture, soft trekking and gradual acclimatization. Alchi’s ancient murals, Likir’s large Buddha, Basgo’s ruins and Lamayuru’s moonland landscape make this one of Ladakh’s richest heritage corridors.

Hanle & Eastern Changthang Ladakh
4,250 m+

Hanle & Eastern Changthang

Hanle is a remote high-altitude settlement known for open skies, the monastery, astronomy region and a powerful sense of space. It is best for photographers, stargazers and travelers who understand permits, altitude and simple accommodation.

Kargil, Drass & Suru Ladakh
2,700–3,500 m

Kargil, Drass & Suru

This western belt connects Kashmir, Ladakh and Zanskar. Kargil is an important road hub, Drass has dramatic mountain landscapes and Suru Valley is greener than much of Ladakh. It is ideal for road journeys and gradual acclimatization.

Altitude Sickness, Prevention & Safety

Leh is already around 3,500 meters, and many popular places in Ladakh are even higher. A beautiful itinerary can be spoiled if altitude is ignored, so every Ladakh journey should be planned with acclimatization in mind.

  • Eat light meals and walk slowly.
  • Do not rush Pangong or Tso Moriri immediately.

Warning Signs

  • Worsening headache
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Confusion or unusual behavior
  • Breathlessness at rest

Many border and lake areas require permits. Requirements vary by nationality and route.

Is Ladakh suitable for luxury travel?

Yes, especially with selected Leh and Nubra properties, private guides and careful pacing.

What is the best trek?

Markha Valley is the classic introductory trek. Tso Moriri and Zanskar are more remote.
